IPL matches to be live on YouTube

If your office allows streaming video, you can now cheer for your favourite Indian Premier League (IPL) team while you are working. Google has tied up with IPL for live streaming of matches on YouTube for an undisclosed sum.

While a formal announcement is expected this week, a spokesperson for Google declined to comment on the partnership.

Last year, YouTube had created an official video channel where the match highlights, opening ceremony, and award functions were shown, but it hadnt streamed the matches even though it had the technology for that.

According to industry sources, live streaming of sports events is a common practice in the West, and is generally in the paid format.

“Typically such Webcasts in the US are subscription-based, where the user pays a certain fixed fee for watching it,” Mr Mahesh Ranka, General Manager, Relay Worldwide, told Business Line.

Considering the huge popularity of IPL, this initiative could, within two years, be targeted at the cricket-deprived Indian diaspora across the globe, said industry experts. “Since cable television is expensive abroad, this could be a hit,” said Mr Ranka. Lalit Modi, IPL commissioner, had also envisaged a plan to hold IPL matches in the US and in Canada in the next 18 months.

YouTube had had its first streaming of a live event when it showed a rock concert by the U2 band in November 2008.
