Sena threat: Gilchrist may skip, but Hayden to play IPL

Amid reports that Australian players might boycott the third edition of the Indian Premier League, there is some good news for fans and the administration. In conversation with NDTV, ace opener Matthew Hayden has confirmed his availability for the IPL 3, showing faith in the security agencies of India.

The reports of the Australian players boycotting the tournament have come about after threats from the Shiv Sena that they will not let Australians enter Maharashtra till the racial attacks on Indians Down Under stop.

Commenting on this, Hayden said, “The process is that the security agencies will investigate and let Cricket Australia know who will let the players know, but the final decision is in the hands of the players. You will definitely see me in India for IPL 3.”

Praising the warm nature of the Indians, the burly Matt said, “I have been welcomed into the bosom of India as a brother. I feel very humbled and privileged to be able to play here.”

The former Australian opener spoke in support of the Indian Premier League and said that it was a big tournament in terms of globalizing cricket.

“I am looking forward to IPL 3 and am confident it will be a huge success,” he said.

Earlier in the day, there were reports of Deccan Chargers; skipper Adam Gilchrist giving the tourney a miss.

“Adam is aware of the situation and he is always very mindful of the security concerns in India. Adam was looking to play in this years tournament but it is always a worry when statements like that (made by Shiv Sena) are being made,” his manager Stephen Atkinson was quoted as saying.

“Ultimately, he will be guided by the views of Cricket Australia and security experts. He is intending to go, but any final decision is subject to travel and security advice by Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association),” he added.

But while Gilchrist seemed concerned, the likes of spinner Jason Krejza and opener Phil Hughes remained unfazed by Senas threats and said that they were looking forward to participating in the event.

“Its something Id love to be involved in. I've watched the last couple of years of the IPL and the crowds and the buzz around it. Ill go in the auction, I think thats next Tuesday, and see what happens,” Hughes said.
