Suryakumar Yadav’s India career in jeopardy? BCCI could take T20 World Cup 2028 call after England tour

2 days ago 42

Well, it’s not just fans but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are worried about Suryakumar Yadav’s form. Since taking over India’s T20I captain in July 2024, Suryakumar as a batter has been in a regression. Barring the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, he hasn’t had even one great run.

Suryakumar Yadav in decline

But in the lead up to the T20 World Cup 2026, India keep winning. So, the board stuck with him. The Men in Blue successfully managed to defend their title but Suryakumar basically had no impact on the outcome. He had the lowest strike rate, 136.72, among all Indian batters. He scored just 29 runs in the knockout matches, including a duck in the final.

Suryakumar has made his aspirations clear. He wants to play the LA 2028 Olympics and the T20 World Cup 2028. But, the BCCI aren’t as certain. He’ll be 38 by the time the two major events end. And he’s already in a decline. It’s just runs aren’t coming, teams have read him like an open book and Suryakumar hasn’t been able to adapt.

BCCI to take call on career

In late to June to mid July, India will play 2 T20Is against Ireland and 5 T20I against England. These 7 matches could decide the fate of Suryakumar’s career as India’s T20I captain and even his spot in the team. Although he has India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s backing, the selection committee may not be entirely sold on him. His performance away from home could decide where he’ll be in the scheme of things for the Olympics and T20 World Cup.

“Obviously Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances. Obviously, he will lead in the UK but after that, discussions going forward till 2028 could be purely performance-based,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Contenders to replace him

Since 2025, two other batters, both of whom captain their Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises have performed better than Suryakumar. Punjab Kings’ Shreyas Iyer and Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Rajat Patidar are the two heir apparent for him. Both are exceptional players of spin, like Suryakumar, but have superior numbers than him.

Granted both don’t have the same volume of matches since they don’t play international cricket, but they’ve outperformed him in every metric. Their strike rate, the biggest talking point in T20s, is way superior. The leadership qualities just put the cherry on top.

If you look at the ongoing IPL 2026 season, it’s clear that Patidar and Shreyas clear Suryakumar much such a massive margin, that frankly it’s shocking that the latter is in India’s team but the former two aren’t.
